Her words left him confused again. “What? I have to let you go? Aderyn, you are love of my life, I cannot forget that feeling! And who beside you I can trust? What if I confess to anyone that I have a demon in my heart and they turn their back on me? What if…” Suddenly he felt different. Kendall looked at angel in front of him and parted his lips. “Oh…”

She only nodded with the same smile. “Oh, that’s right. You were blind to not see people you can trust. And even love. Now please, would you do me a last favor?” Aderyn patted Mirach on his back. “Come back to Cloverdale. Forgot what have to be forgotten. Forgive what have to be forgiven. Do what must be done. And do not lose control. Fight the demon.”

Kendall snorted and smiled a bit. Who like who, but Aderyn knew him the most. He nodded in answer and put his meager belongings on Mirach. Before getting on horse back, for last time, he brushed Aderyn’s hand with his forehead. “Thank you, my friend. My mentor.” For a moment he remained silent, sitting in the saddle. “Aderyn… will we ever see again?”

With half opened lips, she couldn’t find the straight answer. Will they or will they not? But in the end, Aderyn smiled, truly this time. Like if there was no demon between them. “We will. I promise.” She answered with a nod and patted Mirach on the rump. “Now go. You know what to do. Find answers on your questions. Farewell my friend. Till the next time.”

Kendall run his hand through his hair and sighed. It was all his fault, his mistake. It was hard to accept, but that was the ugliest truth. “How can I deal with it without you? Without a person I trust the most and love without regrets?” He asked, lifting his eyebrows in miserable look. He didn’t want to lose her again. Not now when he needed her warm and kindness.

Aderyn smiled softly with some hidden grief under it. “Kendall, you are strong even if you try to deny it. You always were. I watched over you, I see you every day, dealing with coldness of your brother. You will find a way to deal with that demon, to make it all over. And besides…” Slowly, she lifted her hand, to pat him on the arm, couldn’t reach his shoulder. Aderyn frowned in pain, but it was only a short moment, her smile returned shortly after. “I am not the only one you can trust. Not only one you can love. Please, forget about that feeling for me. It will bring you only pain. And not only to you.”

Immediately, he lowered his arm, looking on his palm with fear. Why he did that? “Aderyn… help me. Please.” He whispered. “How am I supposed to stop this? I do not want it anymore.”

“I cannot help you, Kendall.” She whispered with sadness. It was the worst truth she should say. “It was your will to accept the demon. And it’s your will to get rid of it. You have to find a way to stop it. And I cannot interfere.”

“No, no it can’t!” He shouted, raising his hand to hit her. Purple mist was already appearing, crawling on his shoulders.

Aderyn sighed, not even turning to him. “See what it’s doing with you? Are you sure you can control it?” When she turned around, she tenderly touched his wrist and made the demon hide in his heart, frozen for a while. But for how long?

She shook her head again. “Can’t you see what the demon is doing? Kendall, listen to me. You had to make it stop. Have you got any idea how many lives burned to feed it? To feed you?” Aderyn closed her eyes and frowned. “Kendall, you already died. Many times. And many times more you will until demon push your soul away from your body.”

At first Kendall frowned, not sure how to react. But then, a chuckle left his lips. “Fool. I never died. How would I supposed to be here if I was dead? Aderyn, listen to yourself. What if not an angel like you could resurrect me? No one.”

“The demon can.” She said plainly, turning her back to him.

“No, no it can’t!” He shouted, raising his hand to hit her. Purple mist was already appearing, crawling on his shoulders.

Instinctively, Aderyn moved back when he approached her. One more thing she couldn’t explain easily. Stroking her arm, she looked at the deck she was standing at. How angel was supposed to deal with demon in her friend’s body? “Yes, I cannot. And I hoped I would never had to explain that to you. You spent enough time with me to know things like this, Kendall.” Aderyn let the slight sigh escape her lips, before the tough words coming through them. “It’s because of you. I cannot be in the same place with a demon.”

The painful truth hit him like a thunder he could create. He was the cause of her leaving. “But… you are an angel. I saw you fighting demons thousand times! Can’t you… make it vanish?” Kendall asked with hope in his voice. Maybe Aderyn was his solution in this madness? Maybe she could unmade it and they could live happily after?

Aderyn could do nothing but shook her head, red locks covering her face. “It’s not that easy. You have seen me fighting people possessed by demons. Not ones who made pact with them. And you…” She lifted her head to look into his eyes, even if she was to short to reach them. “And you made a pact. The worst one. You let the demon came to you heart and stay there. It’s only matter of time when it replace you.”

His eyes were wide as two blue gems. “What?! Replace me? Don’t be ridiculous! I have control over it. I won’t let it happen. It never will. Demon obeys me.” He snorted. “He always will, without me it would be dead.”

She shook her head again. “Can’t you see what the demon is doing? Kendall, listen to me. You had to make it stop. Have you got any idea how many lives burned to feed it? Kendall frowned, lifting his eyebrows. He was really confused with Aderyn’s words. “I know?” He scratched back of his head. “But what, if I don’t?” Kendall came closer to her, leaning on the broadside beside her. “Can you explain that to me? You loved Cloverdale more than anything. And you cannot come back?”

Aderyn let her shoulders to fall a bit. Every minute here, on this deck, with Kendall beside, was pain for her. She turned around and came to the broadside, leaning on it. “I cannot come back. And you know why.” Angel looked at the sea, with sorrow and grief. She wanted to return, she wanted to help people in Cloverdale again. But she couldn’t when he was around. She had to hide in the deeps, to avoid wolf in his heart and only few know where she was.

That was something Kendall didn’t expected. He dreamed that moment thousand times in his mind, Aderyn coming to him, smiling and admitting she changed her mind. Or at least happy. Not like this. Not when he was going to leave to forget, when he was shattered. And she was sad too, like she knew everything.

“Ad-Aderyn?” His lips shook, he wasn’t sure if it was real or just a mirage. But he felt her hand, he heard her speak. It was definitely her. “Why? Why?” Kendall hide his face under his palm, unable to say anything different.

She sighed, already knowing where it could go. But what else should she do? Ignore it again? “Yes, yes it’s me. I am back. At least for now.” She smiled sadly. She couldn’t stay here for long. Not when he had demon in his heart.

“I want you to return to Cloverdale, Kendall. I do not want to watch you lose your life in madness.” Aderyn said plainly.

He parted his lips and frowned. What she was talking about? There is no way for her to know… Or maybe she could? Kendall shook that idea from his head. “Why should I return to Cloverdale? It’s not the same without you there. If I have to come back there, at least come with me.”

Aderyn let her shoulders to fall a bit. Every minute here, on this deck, with Kendall beside, was pain for her. She turned around and came to the broadside, leaning on it. “I cannot come back. Aderyn smiled to herself before turning visible. She looked sad, filled with miserable and grief, without her wings she looked like a common woman. “Kendall.” She barely whispered. How would be react? She didn’t know, but she had to try it. “Long time no see.” Angel gulped. She expected everything from now. Even if the wolf was coming, she could stop it. Not for long, but enough to talk.

It shouldn’t be like this. Everything went wrong five years ago and now it was only getting worse. And she knew all about this. But what she could do about it? It was Kendall’s decision to leave and become a mage. His assize to accept the wolf’s soul.

Aderyn lowered her flight, still invisible for anyone who would watch. She put her feet beside Mirach, stroking gently animal’s back. Horse neighed softly under her touch. Well, maybe she wanted to be seen after all. Maybe she could persuade him to stay.

Immediately Kendall turned his head to Mirach. “What’s wrong, my friend?” He asked the animal and stroked its back to calm it down. Suddenly he felt something under his fingers. Something like… another hand.

His eyes widened in surprise. As a wizard, he knew only a few that could become invisible. And only one that could be here right now, but it was impossible. “Who are you?” He almost growled. His hand turned to sword hilt, ready to attack if it was a necessary.

Aderyn smiled to herself before turning visible. She looked sad, filled with miserable and grief, without her wings she looked like a common woman. “Kendall.” She barely whispered.
